Signet Rings in the Georgian and Victorian Era's

Signet Rings in the Georgian and Victorian Era's

During the Georgian (1714–1837) and Victorian (1837–1901) eras signet rings were significant pieces of jewellery that reflected the social status, wealth, and identity of the wearer. These rings evolved in style and significance throughout these periods.

In the Georgian era (1714–1837), we see signet rings set with gemstones such as carnelian or bloodstone, stones which were both beautiful and easy to engrave with family crests or personal emblems. The practice of intaglio engraving, where designs were carved into the surface of the gemstone, was common. This created a recessed image that could be used to make wax seals on documents. Signet rings were a clear marker of status and wealth during the Georgian era. They were often worn by men of high social standing, including aristocrats, military officers, and wealthy merchants.

Victorian signet rings (1837–1901) saw a shift towards more sentimental designs, incorporating initials and symbols. After the death of Prince Albert in 1861, saw a rise in the popularity of mourning jewellery. Signet rings were often worn as part of this trend, featuring black onyx or jet, with engravings of mourning symbols like weeping willows, urns, or skulls. These rings served as a way to remember and honor deceased loved ones, reflecting the Victorian fascination with death and mourning practices.

Although we no longer need signet rings as a form of identification their popularity lives on! Signet rings are a timeless piece of jewellery and look great on both men and women and a versatile accessory in contemporary fashion. Whether worn for personal reasons, as a fashion statement, or to signify membership or affiliation, signet rings continue to hold a significant place in the world of jewellery today.
