The journey of a newly made piece of jewellery begins long before it reaches the jeweller's bench. Precious metals and gemstones first need to be extracted from the earth, and mining can be an energy and resource-intensive process.

"Lab-grown" should not automatically be assumed to mean environmentally friendly. As with newly mined stones, their impact depends on where and how they are produced, the energy sources used and the wider supply chain.

There have been other important developments within the modern jewellery industry, including recycled precious metals, responsible sourcing initiatives and greater transparency surrounding the origins of gemstones. These are all positive steps towards more ethical and sustainable jewellery.

However, antique jewellery offers a particularly simple alternative: the piece already exists.

A piece might begin its life as a Georgian rivière necklace, be worn and treasured for generations, pass through the hands of an antique dealer and eventually find a new home more than two centuries later. Its story continues without the need for it to be recreated.

Before modern mass-production techniques, jewellery was predominantly made by hand by highly skilled craftsmen. Stones were individually cut and set, metalwork was shaped and finished by hand, and intricate details were created using techniques that could require many hours of work.
