Chrysoberyl 16th Century Ring

$9,431.00

Reference: GS4847

A remarkable and rare survivor from the 16th century, this early chrysoberyl ring dates to circa 1540–1580. Crafted in fine 22ct gold, the ring is set with a dark green chrysoberyl in a distinctive pie-crust style setting, characteristic of jewellery from the Tudor period.

The chrysoberyl measures approximately 7.52 x 6.29mm at its widest points and is held within a simple hand-worked gold mount, complemented by a fine, slender shank. The stone has a chip to one upper corner, consistent with the considerable age of the piece.

The ring is size P½. A wonderfully evocative piece of Renaissance jewellery, remarkable for having survived for nearly five centuries.
