Victorian Old Cut Diamond Brooch

$28,488.00

Reference: CA9085

A striking Victorian old cut diamond half sunburst brooch set in silver and gold, later rhodium plated, dating to circa 1880. The brooch is designed as a radiant half sunburst, with graduated rays fanning outward from a central old cut diamond. Each ray is set with old cut diamonds, creating a strong sense of movement and lively brilliance. The diamonds have a combined total weight of approximately 10.5 carats.

The diamonds are mounted in silver, the traditional Victorian choice for diamond settings to enhance their sparkle, with a gold backing, and the surface has been later rhodium plated, giving the piece its bright silvery appearance today.

The original screw fitting for this piece is now missing; this suggests it may originally have been intended as a hair ornament in its first incarnation. A later pin fitting has since been attached higher up on the brooch, presumably so it would sit better when worn and allow the dramatic sunburst design to be displayed to full effect.

ABOUT THE ERA

Victorian Era Jewellery

Jewellery in the Victorian era (1837–1901), named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, is notable for its diversity and reflection of the period's social, cultural, and technological changes.

This era can be divided into three distinct periods: the Early Victorian or Romantic period, the Mid-Victorian or Grand period, and the Late Victorian or Aesthetic period. Each phase had its own unique characteristics and influences on jewellery design.
