A perfect Victorian diamond salamander brooch. The salamander head is set with an old mine cut, cushion-shaped diamond and all the rest of the diamonds are rose cuts. With a total of 3.8 carats of diamonds. The eyes are cabochon rubies and he has a short forked tongue. Salamanders have been used in jewellery to symbolise passionate love, immortality, rebirth and luck. In classical antiquity, Salamanders were thought to be able to survive fire so Victorians adopted them to represent romantic courtship. This piece is set in silver and 18ct gold circa and has a French eagle head mark for 18ct on the pin. Crica 1870.
