Maltese diamond Cross Brooch

$25,895.00

Reference: CB173

A wonderful diamond-set Maltese cross brooch dating to around 1840, beautifully crafted in silver with a gold backing. Centred with a cushion-shaped old mine-cut diamond. Set with graduated old-cut diamonds, each mounted in traditional closed-back settings. In total, the brooch is set with approximately 4.85 carats of diamonds, assessed as I–K colour and VS–SI clarity. The reverse of the brooch features a locket compartment, adding a sentimental element typical of the period and allowing the wearer to keep a small keepsake or memento.

The Maltese cross is a historic symbol characterised by its four V-shaped arms that widen outward and meet at a central point, creating eight points in total. The design is most famously associated with the Knights of Malta (Knights Hospitaller) and has long been used as a decorative and heraldic emblem symbolising courage, honour, and protection.
