A stunning Harlequin necklace from the Edwardian era with multi-coloured gems that are all claw set. Featuring a central bright pink topaz, 13 chrysoberyls, 4 red garnets, 4 hessonite garnets and 2 aquamarines. All these stones are interspersed with cabochon amethysts and natural pearls. Set in 18 carat gold. Harlequin means "many coloured" and was originally named after the colourful costumes of the 16th-century Harlequin comedy actors. It was popular from the end of the 18th to the end of the 19th century in vibrantly coloured pieces of jewellery that were frequently worn to masked balls. This necklace is in excellent condition and could be made longer by adding a few more gemstones. Circa 1880. 

Measurements: 37cm long. The central pink topaz measures: 1.1cm x 0.8cm
