A fine George III 18ct gold and black enamel mourning ring, dating to 1779. The plain band is decorated with a central band of black enamel bearing the memorial inscription for Hannah Peyton, framed by delicate milled gold borders. The inscription reads: “HAN:H PEYTON OB: 29 OCT. 1779 AE: 53”, commemorating Hannah Peyton, née Shaw, who died on 29 October 1779 aged 53.


Hannah Peyton (1726–1779), née Shaw, married Abel Peyton (1722–1801) on 21 March 1748. The couple had nine children, five sons and four daughters. Their grandson, Abel Peyton (1799–1887), was later involved in the construction of the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway and became a director of the company and its successor, the Midland Railway.
