Rococo Memorial Ring

¥772,200

Reference: CAX497

Rococo black enamel and fine gold 18ct memorial band ring inscribed "Edward Corbett Serjt At Law ob 25 July 1752" with a makers mark "MC" stamped inside the shank. Serjeants-at-law were the highest rank of barristers in England and Ireland. They were instituted in the 16th century and the term was changed in 1877 to that of Queen's Counsel. Surprisingly Edward Corbett is not mentioned in Wikipedia's list of Serjeants-at-law and it has not been easy to find much information about him. From the National Archives we have found evidence that he was a Serjeant-at-law by 1737. His home was Blakelands in Staffordshire and he married his wife Mary in 1700 and increased the size of his house significantly both before the marriage and afterwards. They had 3 children and he was mayor of Shrewsbury from 1738-39. This ring is in mint condition.
