Late 19th century or early 20th century intaglio signet ring set in 18 carat gold. The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface to produce an image in relief, with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax. Intaglios were often used incorporated into signet rings to sign and seal the wax of a letter or note. This ring is circa 1890-1930.
