Victorian Maltese Cross

A magnificent early Victorian Maltese cross brooch, crafted in silver-topped 18ct gold. The cross is richly set with cushion-cut and old mine-cut diamonds totalling approximately 8.60 carats, predominantly H–J colour with VS to SI clarity. The principal diamonds measure approximately 0.70, 0.54, 0.50 and 0.52 carats (clockwise), with a central stone of approximately 0.35 carats. Dating from circa 1840–1850, the piece is fitted with a folding bail allowing it to be worn as a pendant, together with a secure brooch fitting incorporating a safety catch.
