Georgian Order of Christ Cross Pendant

This is by far the finest Order of Christ cross pendant I have ever had the privilege of owning. Elegantly designed, the cross is mounted with foiled calibre-cut garnets, framed by a scrolling foliate surround set with cushion-shaped and rose-cut diamonds. The 18ct gold back is beautifully engraved with delicate foliate motifs, while the Sacred Heart suspension is set with a striking combination of rubies, diamonds, and emeralds. This exceptional piece was crafted circa 1790.
The Order of Christ was created in the early 14th century for the knights of the Knights Templar, which had been disbanded in 1312. In 1789 it became one of the three Ancient Military Orders bestowed by the Portuguese Monarchs. Although dissolved in 1910 it was revived in 1917 to honour citizens who have given exceptional service to the Portuguese state.
