Micro Mosaic Butterfly

A particularly attractive Victorian 18ct gold micro-mosaic butterfly brooch, dating to circa 1840–1850. The oval plaque is centred with a beautifully detailed butterfly, its wings expertly composed of glass tesserae in vibrant shades of green, gold, amber and coral, all set against a finely executed white micro-mosaic ground. Framed by an elegant red-and-white geometric mosaic border, punctuated by four decorative circular roundels positioned at the cardinal points and accented with coloured glass inlays.
The quality of the workmanship is especially noteworthy. The brooch remains in very good condition for its age, with only a single small chip visible to the lower circular roundel.
