Nineteenth-century Japanese shakudo beads. This Japanese metal work was introduced into the West in the Victorian period and became very popular. Originally used as decoration for Japanese sword hilts and ojime it is a mixture of copper and gold and creates an almost lacquer-like effect. This piece was made circa 1860.
