Victorian Pearl and Diamond Comet Brooch

$1,938.00

Reference: CA8988

This exquisite Victorian-era comet brooch beautifully captures the celestial wonder of Halley’s Comet, which graces Earth’s skies only once every 75 to 79 years. Due to the rarity of its appearance, throughout history, jewellery has been crafted to commemorate this awe-inspiring event. These pieces often feature a distinctive tapered design, with a cluster of gemstones at one end, much like the one seen in this brooch. This style first gained popularity during the Georgian era and continued into the Victorian period.

The brooch is meticulously set with lustrous pearls, centered around an old mine-cut diamond, with delicate shooting stars radiating from a central star, symbolising the comet’s celestial journey toward the moon. Crafted in 15ct gold, the pin is detachable, offering versatility. Circa 1870, this piece is a rare and beautiful tribute to one of the most iconic natural phenomena.

ABOUT THE ERA

Victorian Era Jewellery

Jewellery in the Victorian era (1837–1901), named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, is notable for its diversity and reflection of the period's social, cultural, and technological changes.

This era can be divided into three distinct periods: the Early Victorian or Romantic period, the Mid-Victorian or Grand period, and the Late Victorian or Aesthetic period. Each phase had its own unique characteristics and influences on jewellery design.
